A contrast and comparison of the available light fly reels readily avalable today. I'd love to see a side by side comparison of the Bass Pro Shop Classic
ultralight....the J Austin Forbes Avon or Magnesium....the Sage clicker....the Dennison......and even a few "classic" reels like the Pflueger 1834 or
Redington CT.

There's a wide price range between the Dennison and the Sage....I wonder about the performance differences?

Titan,
Here's a link for some information on Young reels. The reels that you need to look at are going to be the Beaudex, Pridex and Condex with a 3" reel
coming in at 5 oz. Young built reels for numerous private label shops and the smallest one that I am aware of is a 2 1/2" reel. This link will get you
started and you can find other reels listed in these pages. Hope this helps.

go ahead and swiss cheese the frame to minimize weight

A bar stock foot with two holes drilled in it would help with weight also.

Use a small diameter turned wood handle

That would probably suffice for a light reel.

H! David,

I am doing my best to make these match the size/cost of the high-end aluminum billet reels - it is no problem with the larger sizes 3/4 and up. But these
smaller ones are going to be a challenge to meet the weight. I have tried to maintain the "look" throughout the family of sizes, but I might have to
"Swiss cheese" these little ones a bit on the inside. The titanium is so strong I might go with 0.020" for the side plates with a large arbor.
