What do you use to protect phones or cameras? |
Lead | ||
|
It's a great question which was inspired by the camera thread suggesting that many folks do not have water proof cameras and are forced to be creative in
protecting their investments. I went to battle with AT&T over my frequent water-borne incidents and lost- I am no longer insured. I would love to see
AT&T come forward with a water-proof phone like verizon's entry. So I am resign to using a sandwhich bag mostly, and sometime I use a clear water
-proof camera bag.
I'd like to hear you suggestions.

Les, I used to work in the wireless industry, and always told the customers that bought the insurance from me on their phones rather than telling them the
phone got wet. Tell them you lost it. Bam, new phone.
Now, what I normally do, is if there is a chance of rain, or deep water or what have you, I use a Ziploc bag, the one with double zippers, and toss the phone and cam in it. |

Thanks Dennis, I 've got the camera part covered with my Olympus Stylus- it's water proof. I need to work on a cell solution. I wish AT&T would
come out with a water-proof phone. I'd stand in line for that one. ;)

I just keep my phone and camera in my pocket, no protection at all for either. Most times I won't take my phone with me to the creek. I really should carry
them in zip locks though.

Ziploc's for the phone, don't ask me about the time I tucked it in my waders pocket and forgot.
Camera doesn't go unless I'm in the canoe or I know the water really well. Therefore, not too many fishing pics from this boy. Hayden

Ha ha - a phone? While fishing?
Never crossed my mind, I'm afraid ;). I use a Simms camera dry-bag strung on my wader belt (my camera is a little bigger than the flat point and shoots) and have found it works very well - even while deep wading. Dry Creek Camera Bag |

I've got a waterproof bag designed for keeping gear dry...I keep my phone in it and camera (don't have a waterproof cam). Most of the time I am in my
kayak and my wife wants me to carry the phone....just in case.

I could see myself picking up a camera bag that costs less than 40% of what I paid for my camera.

I have a Pentax Optio W10 waterproof camera, so it is in the vest pocket with "zinger" attached without fear of it getting wet or dropped in the
water. As for the cell phone, it STAYS IN THE JEEP!!! That way I can check it if I so choose, but when I go fishing, I am there to relax, & I can't do
that by either watching a clock or listening for a call. The phone calls can wait!

The cell phone is there as a clock only since I am on a VERY tight schedule on most fishing outings, and hour here or there due to having a young family. Also,
she could go into labor at any time, and I kind of need to have the phone on me ;)

I could see myself picking up a camera bag that costs less than 40% of what I paid for my camera. Fair enough - my camera ran a little over $500 when I purchased it, though. The bag was on special, at my local fly shop - and I think I paid $25 Canadian for it (which is what? About $2.99 US?). Don't mind my phone-phobia, though - ha ha! I've worked Coast Guard search and rescue for the last 14 years, and spend 50% of my life waiting for the phone to ring with somebodies drama or trauma on the other end of the line - usually in the middle of the night in a howling huriphoon. The last thing I want is to hear a phone ring on my "off cycle" (the other 50% of my life) and consequently have neither a home nor cell phone (which makes me a bit of a hick, methinks!). My girlfriend is pushing hard to equip me with one of these units, though - for my frequent forays into the back-of-beyond, where there is no cell service anyway. Spot Locator |

I got my $250 camera on clearance for $100, so at best, i would spend probably $20 on a camera bag. I hate having a phone, but use it all the time away from
home.

I use a pay-as-you go phone......cost maybe $45 and $30 for 3 months worth of service that I have to try hard to use..... HATE talking on the phone, but the
Army requires me to have one for emergency purposes.
I think I got the waterproof bag at Bass Pro for <$20. David |

Andy,
Oh yeah, Kay has me do this but not for my health or security. Five years ago she underwent a procedure to install a pacemaker for her heart. It had only been a couple of weeks since her procedure, and I went down to the creek without my phone and got into fish I mean I was insane with fish. Back home, Kay had an episode or reaction to the newly installed device and felt the urge to get to the hospital. She called and called to no answer. Finally she called her mother, and My MIL drove over to take her in to the ER. Needless to say when I got home I found myself in deep #$%$%^. Now, I carry a phone-everywhere! |

Les, I completely understand that. I take it that she is doing well now though. I often take it, but I leave it in the car if any chance of precipitation rears
its head.
