leader loop |

I picked up some line last week at a pawn shop...got it and 12 flies from a old box in the back of the store...redington wf3f brand new..anyhow, I was cleaning
up and the bag had something that I believe is a leader loop...It is about 6" long and looks to be like it is furled with a loop on one end and a little
shrink tube on it??...How would one begin to put this on a fly line...I could use it on the line but, do not know how to connect it...any directions for me???
I did not have stuff like this when I was fly fishing oh so long ago...Rob

I wouldn't bother with it. I don't like them. Nail knot a leader to your fly line, then measure back 24" from the tip and ad a loop or tippet
ring. Tie the tippet section back on and add some uv knot sense to the nail knot. you can also nail knot 6-8" of 30# to tour line and put a loop in it to
connect leaders. Those braided leader loops sink the tips of my fly lines. If you must use it slide the shrink tube on, then the loop. Slide the shrink wrap
back over the line and loop and hold it over a light bulb or something to shrink the shrink tube and there you have it.

I've lost fish with those "chinese handcuffs". In WY two years ago I saw my big rainbow jump an fly away with my fly, tippet, and leader- the
braided connection had slipped off and I thought i had made it secure with shrink tube. I wouldn't use them again. RD speaks the truth about a better
solution.

Thanks guys....I was not sure what to do with them...I will put them away in my fishing junk box...I have already put my furled leader on with a nail knot
...but did not glue it...what is a good uv glue...I do not tie flies and I assume that is what is used there also...appreciate the help...Rob

I use them on 3wt and up, and never had a failure with one in 13 years.

I use the finer weave loops [Cortland's were pretty coarse]. They are too long, however. I cut them in half, slide them on, and whip finish the cut end
with tying thread. A dab of superglue on the whip. Never use the shrink tube. Don

I just switched to a double taper 3 wt line that is "as new" but it has one of those loops attached...I had one years ago too. Even though I never
had a failure, I took the 1st one off & this one will not see another day on the water either.....I just don't like 'em...but that's just my
preference.

In an ideal world you could nail knot every furled leader. But leaders can really make a difference in the cast and I switch them all the time. The only lines
that I nail knot are the 0 to lighter lines. With these you can see the hinge where the loop is affixed when you cast. The line is just not heavy enough to not
react to the extra bulk/weight of the junction. Don

I use the Rio braided loops, but like I said, only on 3wt or heavier lines. For 2wt or lighter I'll stick to a piece of nail knotted mono and perfection
loop.
