No, not me...my 5ft garcia brown ultralight spinning rod with mitchell 308...I have owned this rod since I was 14...56 now...My Father bought this for me to
trout fish local steams in WV...I have always carried it in my truck in a tube..with the reel in a felt bag in the glove compartment.with some lures..I did so
I never had to say to myself.."That water looks good"...I just pulled over and pulled out my little lady and fished it...It has given me countless
hrs of enjoyment...So, why do decide to retire it...Well, took out my 7'11" 3wt today my friend bought me...fished the same lake where I had the 4
pounder on my 5' 2 wt. that I love...The wind was blowing so hard that I just could not cast well...after untangling myself from my flyline at least twice
I decided to quit before I got disgusted and started to form any bad habits...I went back to the truck and got the garcia and fished for about 45 minutes and
caught 3 bass, largest was 14 inches and had a good time...But, something seemed to be missing..Did not take me long to realize that I wanted a UL flyrod in
my hand instead...I guess you could call me hooked...I intend now to carry a outfit and some flies in the truck with me from now on....I came home...Hung my
garcia on the wall just as I had last fished it beside my bowhunting equipment and my first baitcasting outfit...the little lady is now officially
retired......Rob

Everyone's got some similar story. Mine was tacking spinning tackle as back up when I first got into fly fishing. One day I made the decision to try without the back up; in fact I told my wife that I was gonna catch something or sell the rod. Today I practically use nothing but fly gear. Les |

A better end than my first rig. I think the tip got busted at some point so I wound kite string on the Mitchell 300 and used it for kite flying attached to the
butt of the broken rod. As to the wind, if you can get it at your back you can always rollcast. We have had some real blows in DFW the last few weeks. I have
noticed at Jerry's pond that there is always one angle around the perimeter that can be fished. May not be any fish there, but you can cast. You are right
about feeling like you should be fishing a flyrod. I don't believe I ever thought, "If I just had a baitcaster". At most, it is "I wish I
had brought a heavier flyrod". This only happens when I hook a much bigger fish than expected and the adrenaline kicks in. Don

Actually I used to use a roll cast a lot...did not want to waste the time or spook fish with regular casting...just did not think of it the other day...I do
remember how difficult it was when I tried it years ago...till the one time something distracted me and the line settled, and I made a perfect cast...Once I
realized I had to wait for the line to settle in the water I really used it a lot...I also try not to recast/false cast much...I believe it spooks fish and I
really rather have more time in the water...Right now I am in a learning curve using the ultralight and do a lot of false casting to get the feel of the outfit
I am using...Getting better tho....Rob

I had that rod in a circular rack where it sat just above floor level & the mice chewed the cork grip pretty good (salt from perspiration). When I held a "moving sale", I gave that rod to a young man who admired it & asked how that "little rod" was for bluegill...he seemed as enamored with that rod as I was back in '69 & I just couldn't "sell" it to him. When I saw that look in his eyes, I just knew it found a new "Master". I'm sure he loves it as I did. Thanks for posting & bringing back many fond memories. Mike |
