I personally took to it naturally coming over from UL spin tackle with two and four pound test monofilament line. I bought a 3wt a couple years ago and never looked back. Light fly tackle just offers more casting and fishing feel to me, and on top of that, I like to feel my fish run and shake their head. Ultralight Aficionado Bluegill Snob! Andy

Since I fish for panfish so much, anything more than a 3wt is pretty much overkill. I now fish 2wt's as well, and I'd like add a 1wt to the arsenal at some point too. Posts: 232 11/19/08 6:56 PM Forum Supporter	I grew up fishing ultra-light spin tackle and was a terror at the local ponds. Years went by and my love of fishing brought me to the local bass circuit. After numerous tournaments and even a short stint on the semi-pro circuit complete with the Ranger bass boat and the latest electronics, the enjoyment faded. The rigors of tournament fishing while working full time and raising a family sucked all of the fun right out of fishing for me. Working overtime to pay the next entry fee, sleeping in the truck for a couple of hours after driving all night and the worst part was the guilt from missing yet another family function. I sold it all and went back to fishing small lakes and pond the way I fell in love with fishing.........in a float tube fishing ultra-light tackle. This time the tackle was almost exclusively fly fishing gear. No more deadlines, no more weigh-ins, just plain old fishing for the fun of it. Now I'm only in it for the tug. Doug

Posts: 115 11/19/08 11:15 PM	I fished UL spinning gear starting when I got out of the Army in 1969 & I was made fun of for my "toy" rod. That didn't last long, 'cuz I caught more & larger panfish than my buddies. Now I fly fish exclusively (except for MAYBE one yearly trip to Lake Erie for deep perch) & always fish as light as conditions permit. Go to rod is my 3 wt as it does much better in wind, but also fish a lot with the 2 wt when wind conditions permit. Mikey

Posts: 25 11/19/08 11:41 PM	Like some others I started my UL trend with spinning gear. Used to mix in some fly fishing but not much. Then I just decided to put my spinning & baitcasting gear away and focus on fly fishing. So I built a 4 wt. Broke the 4 wt. Then bought a 5 wt. Realized that was the wrong direction for most of my fishing. Went to a 6'6" 3 wt that was nice but lacked the length for easy nymphing and line control on the larger waters that I fish. Now you would think I would just get a longer rod. Not me, I was convinced by others that a 4 wt would be better for my type of fishing so I swallowed that hook and bought a very nice 4 wt. Then I purchased a 8'6" 3wt for my oldest grandson and I've been using it more then he does. The 4 wt casts extremely well but lacks the overall fishing experience of the lighter wt rods. Plus just like my UL spinning equipment I feel I can put more consistent pressure when using lighter line because the lighter rods are more forgiving to head shake or surges that can break light tippets. Just don't mess up and lift that rod tip too high or SNAP! I'm now sold on UL so today I bought one of Andy's 3wt rods for my youngest grandson. Of course I'll have to try that one out just to be sure it works. Now I plan to go smaller and see what happens.

I hadn't fished since I was a kid until a couple of years ago on a trip to Colorado, I saw flyfishermen and got infected. I got a 6wt but it didn't take me long to find out that the real action was lighter, so i got a 3wt which is pretty much my default rod now. It is great to find other people who think a 4 inch bluegill is fun too. mike

Posts: 9 11/20/08 8:23 PM	I fish UL for a few reasons. For the past 5-6 years, I have been fishing ul spinning tackle and having a blast. So last year when I decided to get back into fly fishing I decided to stay with ul tackle. I find ultralight tackle is more sensitive and allows me to present a small fly more delicately. I also hook more fish. Yes, I do catch more small fish but I also catch more fish. When that monster panfish hits, who could ask for more fun.

Posts: 191 11/21/08 10:18 PM	A few years ago (ok, 1967) I turned an old 4.5 ft solid glass ultralight spinning rod into a fly rod. By sheer good fortune, the only fly line at the local discount store was a level 4wt Aircell, and the only reel a Martin "tuna can," and both were within the budget of a 12 yr old and magically matched the makeshift rod. So, I started ultralight fly fishing (and rod building) simply because it was all I had available or could afford. It worked so well that the next Christmas when my parents gave me a Heddon 8.5 ft 8wt and Perrine auto reel, I felt like I was outfitted more for tarpon than the bluegill and crappie I was after. Although a lot of tackle has passed over the threshold since then, I've never gotten away from the feeling that I was over-gunned with anything over a 4wt. -CC Last Edited By: cross creek one 11/21/08 10:22 PM. Posts: 106 11/23/08 11:35 AM	The ponds and small lakes here in Southern Florida are loaded with fish that can be alot of fun on UL tackle, I was out the other day with the a new Cabelas clear creek 2 WT and had alot fun catching palm size Bluegills and Shellcrackers, caught an occasional LM 4-6 inches. I enjoy fishing for Panfish with UL Cane and Graphite rods as much as I do fishing for larger fish. BTW I was using a McGinty soft hackle, letting it sink about 2 inches under the surface and the fish were killing it, I wore out two of em .... Paul

Posts: 2 11/24/08 11:52 AM	I fish a 3wt only because it was given to me by a friend of mine. It's a 7'3" 2 pc full flex that he made some years back. In all honesty, I doubt if I would fish anything less than a 4 if he hadn't given me that rod. Here in Central Iowa during the warm months, wind can be a factor. The 3wt becomes in practical. I tend to use it more on the spring creeks, in the NE part of the state, for trout more than warm water. Posts: 78 11/24/08 12:09 PM	Dave, we have wind here in Kansas and if you adjust your casting, you can really fish a lightweight rod just fine. We have those winds coming down the mountains and across our state. I fish a 7'6" 2wt in all conditions and thus far, in winds up to 15 mph, I am having no problems.
