I want to build a bamboo fly rod! |
Lead | ||
|
I've wrapped a few rods over the last few years. I wrap them for myself or a gift for a friend. Most of them have been casting rods. This idea of building
a bamboo rod is quite overwhelming. It looks to me that one has to have an engineers degree and a small fortune to just get started. I know some of you guys
build boo rods. Can someone help me out? Get be started...heading in the right direction...a direction that wouldn't require me selling my first-born.

Sean, you may want to buy one of the better books on bamboo rod making. Sorry I can't suggest any titles since I only wrap glass and graphite, although I
would like to wrap a ferruled boo blank sometime. You can also check out Clarks board if you haven't already. http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/

Sean,
As mentioned many good books are out there on bamboo rod building. As I understand one of the best rod builders to put down on paper good instructions, and guidance was "Master's Guide to Building A Bamboo Fly Rod by: Garrison, Carmichael". Everett Garrison was an engineer and as I understand was an incredible rod builder. I know that one of the two rods I want is a Garrison and also an E.W. Edwards quadrate. Hope this helps, Jack |

The easiest route is to buy a ferruled blank. Mark Fitch and Tim Zietak come to mind. Your investment in tools will easy outstrip the cost of a couple of
project blanks. Unless you intend to build a bunch of rods, I would go the finished blank route. Check with Andy and Jerry for their comments on the quality of
Fitch Blanks. I got a one tip blank today from Mark for $ 275 delivered on EBay, but the Chinese sell them for as little as $75! Don

Fitch does incredible work, although Don't talents for finishing them out makes them what they are!

Welcome to the addiction. Bamboo is all consuming and soon you will lay awake at night thinking about the next rod.

You bought the right book for sure. Check out these links also.
http://www.grassart.net/forum/ http://www.uwm.edu/~stetzer/Tapers/index.html http://www.canerod.com/rodmakers/index.html http://www.powerfibers.com/ These are all very helpful sites, check them out and decide how far you want to go, be careful. Pacchef23 is right, it has become an obsession for me,![]()

Take a course | #9 | ||

If you are serious about building bamboo and there isn't anyone in your area that you can go and visit to get an idea of what is involved the least
expensive thing you can do is take one of the courses that many cane rod builders offer. They cost anywhere from $1000 to $1500 and last for a week but you end
up with a finished rod for yourself and you will know if you want to proceed. There is a very serious expenditure in specialized equipment and it doesn't
make any sense spending the money unless you are willing to commit yourself to the craft. You will know that at the end of the course, and if you don't go
ahead you at least have a cane rod that you have built yourself and can enjoy fishing.

I would be interested in taking a class or getting some hands on instruction. Anyone in dfw, Texas area that would be willing to show me the ropes?

I see you have posted at Clark's. That's the right spot for your request. How about a more catchy tittle for your post e.g. "Calling all cane rod
makers in the Dallas Fort Worth area of Texas"?
Good luck in your search!!

I am also a beginning bamboo rod builder. All the books mentioned so far are good and I have read them all. I would add one more and that would be Fly Rods
Galore by the venerable George Barnes. He shows that there are many ways to achieve our end, a good bamboo rod.
A school or lessons from another builder would also be a good idea. Best of luck from the home town of James Heddon and Sons.

thanks. btw, I think I'm going to wrap a fiberglass rod next, in the bamboo tradition (whatever that means). I feel I need to get another fly rod under my
belt.
