Posts: 2509 04/25/09 5:17 PM Forum Owner / Administrator	Tags : None Hey guys, I'm kind of miffed that Mustad decided to totally revamp their line of fly hooks. I was usually able to find the "classic" Mustad hooks for reasonable prices, but the new line of hooks aren't as reasonable. I also can't stand hooks coming 25 packs either. I prefer hooks to come in 100 packs at a reasonable price. A couple weeks ago, I was running very short on my Mustad 3906B #14's. So I went to the local fly shop and had to fork over 6 bucks for 25 Tiemco hooks. They are almost gone by the way. I wish I would have stock piled Mustad 3399 and 3366 hooks before this change was made. The 3399 was a nice subtitute for the 3906/3906B, and half the price of either of those. Posts: 12 04/25/09 11:45 PM	Tiemco for dry flies. Mustad for most everything else. For good deals on commodity items like hooks, thread, beads, etc., watch eBay like a hawk. There is always someone selling off excess store stock. For instance, you were looking for 3906Bs, here is a bulk purchase of 6 boxes of differing sizes. The best deals show up in late summer. Tom

It used to be my rule of thumb was not to pay more than .05 a hook, guess those days are gone for good. Glad I'm not tying flies for a living. Posts: 38 04/26/09 7:33 AM	It is unfortunate but it seems if there is anything you like you better buy multiples because it will not be around for long. I saved some old Mustad boxes and was looking at them not long ago,. the price written on the 100 pk. boxes was less than three dollars. I am of a bit older than alot of you other guys.I recently bought Mustad's current offering of one of my favorite Mustad hooks. It is the 3665a which is a 6x long streamer hook with a limerick bend,. these were great for small streamers in size 12. Though still a nice hook, they just don't have the same feel of the old Mustads. Hook & Hackle currently has a sale on their own label chemically sharpened hooks, $9.95 per 100. I have never used their hooks nor have I dealt with them lately. If I needed hooks at this point I would guve them a try. Regards Ken

Having just paid .24 cents PER hook with that useless pack of Tiemco's, I have to find something else. Pszy, your, right. The days of .05 cent hooks are gone. I've used Dai Riki before and those come in a 50 pack, and the price is better than Tiemco. They are actually about the same quality as far as I can tell. Ken I too like the Mustad 3665A #12 for exactly the same reason you do. A great hook. The last time I bought some though I think I paid $12 per 100. J. Posts: 8 04/26/09 3:55 PM	for mustads, go to FLYFISHERS PARADISE, just recieved a thousand from them.... another good one , Dai-riki , Dan Bailey's ,they are the US importer , made in Korea. expect to find one bad hook in every box...... Most everyones shop brand hooks are made in china . soo sorry no can do ......Cabelas brand is TMC.they come out of the same case.

Posts: 20 04/26/09 6:13 PM	Heck, when you start talking hooks I have Mustad boxes from when they sold in gross (144) quantities--and the price on a 94840 #18's is a clear $2.10. It certainly is a culture shock going into shops and laying out $12 for a box of 100 Dai-Riki's. But, it's a lifetime of tying flyes, it's part of my genetics---so it's just dig deeper like everything else. Philosophical? nah it's just my method of not getting pi$$ed off. "Doc"

Posts: 43 04/27/09 12:01 AM	As I don't tie enough for quantity to be an issue, I've found ebay to be quite a good source for tying stuff, in general. There's a few suppliers I go to often and they treat me well. Perhaps we could post a thread with some of the more reliable sellers? -Jim
