Posts: 26 05/07/09 11:38 PM	Tags : None Hi Everyone, I just bought my first UL set-up. A TFO Professional 8' 2wt 3 piece and a BBS I reel. I purchased it from the guys at Mad River Outfitters here in Columbus after testing a few rods including the TFO Finesse Series 7'3" 2wt and a 6' 2wt both of which for me were a little noodley. Anyway, I've been fishing this new setup for about a week now on the local lake just for bass and bluegill and I like it a lot. I'm still trying to get used to the action though and getting enough line speed. I generally gravitate towards more open water so that I can cast a lot of line quickly and get some distance. I'm wondering if I can fix the line speed issue with a different line. I currently have Orvis Wonderline Generation 3 Trout Weight WF 2wt. Any suggestions? Thoughts? Thanks, Elisa

Posts: 29 05/08/09 5:00 AM	great set up! have given that rod the wiggle test and it felt pretty quick to me. spoken to a couple of people who say it's really more of a 3wt. than a 2. would definitely try a gpx 2, maybe even a gpx 2DT or a 3wf.

Posts: 2508 05/08/09 7:44 AM Forum Owner / Administrator	Elisa, this is just my personal opinion, but I can't stand Orvis lines. They are stiff, and have too much memory. I've gravitated to Cortland lines over the past year, and I've been happy with them. I currently have a Cortland Clear Creek WF2F, a wonderful casting line. The only issue I have with it is that it's a dark olive color and can be hard to see on the water at times. I also like the Hook & Hackle branded lines, which are made by Cortland. These are nice and supple with no major memory issues. I just got one of the WF2F in the mail yesterday. I spooled it up and took it to the creek right away. I'm very happy with it, it casts and shoots very well. These lines are a light olive, but are much easier to see on the water, they kind of glow almost. I'll have both lines at Darby creek if you want to try them out. The right line can really make a difference. J. Posts: 26 05/08/09 8:23 AM	Thanks for the response. I have Cortland line on my non-UL rods and your absolutely right, they are much more supple. I will pick up one of these lines as soon as I get a chance. About the rod, I've heard a few other people say that its really more of a 3wt too. (still trying to understand the weight system after all these years) I was actually thinking that while I was casting it. Regardless, I'm happy with how it throws line.. You're right, it is relatively quick. Can't wait to catch something monstrous on it! :-) e

Posts: 1966 05/08/09 8:26 AM Administrator / Moderator	Elisasound, Good observations about line speed on the rods as a rule especially in the Series one or the Pro. I've got an 8'6" 3wt Pro that's more parabolic than the rest and it loves DT3. I'd give DT2 a chance and like the others have mentioned you could always move up to WF3. I'm not sure I would go that light personally, but I haven't tried one yet so I'll wait to pass any judgment on them. If you aren't used to casting and fishing a 2wt, then it can take some time to get used to. For me it was an easy transition since I've been fishing 3wt rods for so many years. Posts: 2055 05/08/09 12:01 PM Administrator	Everyone needs a 00wt!! :-) Seriously though, the difference in line weight between a 0 wt and 00 wt is negligible, but I can certainly cast bigger and heavier flies with the 00wt TXL than I could with my Dan Craft 0 wt (which is also a very cool rod!). In this case (TXL versus Dan Craft) it's a matter of line-speed though and not line weight. It's just easier for me to cast a slightly larger fly with the faster TXL. With regards to the TFO 2 wt, if it doesn't feel quite right with a 2 wt line go ahead and try several other lines. If you have a shop nearby you may be able to borrow some to test in their parking lot as long as you buy a line from them when you're done. I'm not a big fan of Orvis lines either, for the reasons that have already been mentioned, but I do find that they seem to be true to their rated weight and I can cast them well because they are pretty slick. They just don't fish as well for me with all that memory. I'll second the vote for Cortland lines and also the Hook & Hackle lines.

Posts: 968 05/08/09 12:26 PM	Elisa. A good way to see if your rod is underlined is to clamp the line against the grip with your rod hand and put your line hand in your pocket. You now have a fixed length of line out. If you are making a smooth cast all is well. If the cast is weak, you can speed things up with the line hand, but that is not ideal. Try a heavier line. You should make line hauls to improve upon good, not to bring poor up to good. Don

Posts: 55 05/11/09 8:21 PM	The reel is the Franco Vivarelli semi automatic fly reel. it is carbon fiber and comes with a life time warranty. this type of fly reel is very popular in europe. it can take up to a 7wf line. carbon fiber allows this reel to be light but strong enough for big trout. There is an adjustable drag too. unlike the old automatic fly reels of yesteryear the semi automatic reel has no spring to retrieve the line. Bill

Posts: 55 05/11/09 9:12 PM	The silver reel is the ATP 37 semi automatic fly reel The other reels are made by Franco Vivarelli. The Gold Star is a salt water semi automatic reel. I use this for stripers, pike and carp. All reels are made in Italy & have adjustable drags.

Posts: 55 05/12/09 12:07 AM	the lever is squeezed and line is taken in. the handle returns to a neutral position so that you can squeeze the handle as often as needed to retrieve your line. since there is no spring it is not possible to zip all the line in like the old automatics do.
