Normally $175.00- that's a good price. The smallest line weight is a 7'6" 2wt:

Are these pretty good rods? This seems almost too good to pass up, how would they compare with the tfo finesse and elkhorn 2 wts as far as quality goes?

The cork on Cabelas rods could be nicer, but they are decent casting. As for workmanship, they rank Elkhorn 1st, TFO second, Cabelas third.

i have the 8'3" 3 wt. and love it. it's a fast action rod, but not a broomstick. bluegill are fun on it, but has enough backbone to handle
larger fish. can delicately cast a dry up close, but will boom out a longer cast with a bead head woolly too. i was in cabelas yesterday and didn't see
that the lst's were on sale. probably a good thing as i'd have spent a $100 i didn't have. can't go wrong and they have a $25 year
guarantee.

Does anyone know who makes these rods? Seems like they have a pretty solid warranty that is comparable to the major rod companies, i think this will be my
first UL rod

RedRaider09,
I don't know who makes this one, but I have been made aware that in the past Loomis made their blanks. If that's the case, then it should be a nice rod. Les |

I thought after the 2wt. I just picked up that, that would be the last stock rod I would ever buy. I just ordered a 8'3" 3wt. $100.00 w/rod tube and
25 year warranty and Cabelas is good about no questions asked refunds. (I've used it in the past.) It's good to see that some of this outsourced
(Asian) fly rod/reels are starting to show at a reasonable price. I don't get how a company that made a rod or reel in the US, now makes the same thing in
Asia, can charge the same price or more????? They can pound sand!

Now that I'm involved in the Fly Fish Ohio 2wt Shoot-Out, and seeing these Asian made rods, and how they stack up against U.S made rods, I see that there really isn't much difference in performance anymore. Whats sad, is that I just built a rod from a blank that is made here, but it doesn't even compare to the review rods I have tested so far, all of which are made in Asia. American companies still making rods here in the States now have serious competition from abroad. Korean made reels are top notch, and the Chinese are in fact building some killer rods. The times are changing, fast. J. |

Isn't that always the case (at least in modern history--we do owe a great deal of credit and gratitude in world history to the creativity and innovation of
China). But, over the last 100 years, we have led the world in creation/innovation/invention, but the Pacific Rim countries have made it cheaper, better,
smaller, faster. Right or wrong, it is the way things are. So we shouldn't be at all surprised that graphite flyrods won't be the same. Their bass rods
are very expensive though (a matter of supply and demand). Anyway, it was bound to happen. And like so many other American products, we will be left
behind--until we develop something new.

Sean, we have become a nation that is consumer based, not manufacturing based.
As for the Asian rods being more expensive these days, well there are a few reasons for that. First, the American import companies are tagging on warranties that Asian rods didn't used to have. So now your paying for two rods essentially. Funny how there aren't any bloated warranties with conventional tackle, and it's affordable for the most part. Second, factories overseas are paying workers more than they used to. Les I and I talked about this the other day. The cheap junk Chinese factories have been shut down. Hardy for instance has their rods produced in China. Funny how they are just as nice as the English made ones. These workers are no doubt paid more to ensure a better product. Your aren't going to get the kind of Hardy quality you expect if the workers aren't paid much. Skilled labor is going to cost more than unskilled labor. J. |

You can pay double the going salary in most Asian countries and it wouldn't come close to our national minimum wage. I was in Taiwan in 2003 and we (5 of
us) ate out almost every meal the average total of our meal combined was $5-10 US dollars. American companies go over seas to avoid employee insurance,
medicare, workman's comp. The US dollar is stronger than the NT dollar, and adding a warranty does not give them a right to double or triple the rod price.
With that type of thinking a $60.00 rod becomes $300.00????? Let look at a rod I purchased two years ago. Baston Rainshadow (IM6) 6'6" 4pc. 2wt. This
blank goes for $11.00 low to $22.00 on the high end. Components for this rod are $50-80 dollars depending on the hardware you want. Now we have a complete fly
rod for $100.00 out the door. (Mine was custome built and shiped for $89.00) This blank comes from over seas my cost is $11-22 holesale must be around $5 I
would immagne the hardwear would drop consideribley as well. I'm guessing you could get this shipped to the US at under $50.00 a rod. I doubble the price
for a 25 year warranty and I'm at $100.00 not $200 or $300. So now it just comes down to greed. I like how a lot of rod companys are giving such massive
discounts during this ressession and still turning a proffit?!!?!?!?!!!???? I hope we rember this when we get out, and call BS on over priced gear, espically
overseas gear. I for one am sick of it and will build my own from now on. (unless I find a killer e-bay deal) I just need to learn to wrap a rod now.

Your preaching to the choir . Just ask Les, I bitch and moan about this stuff to him on the phone daily. HA. It doesn't matter what the country of origin
for a rod is, if it's a fly rod, we are being ripped off. It's not just the rods though, it's all fly gear. There are too many people in this sport
that think they have to spend top dollar on fly gear or else it's crap. Well that's not the case anymore. I can spend less than $200 on an import rod
and it will be the equal of any American rod costing twice as much. The proof is sitting right here at my house right now. There are 19 more rods I have to
review for the FFO 2wt Shoot-out. I can't wait for this to be published. It's gonna be great.
Here is a link to an copied article about fly rod costs. It makes me mad every time I read it. http://graylinghuntertalk52985.yuku.com/topic/896 The article is reprinted in the first post of the thread. I build all my own rods now, just to save money. I refuse to pay the going rate for the vast majority of factory built rods. Fly rods shouldn't cost much more than conventional rods, and fly reels shouldn't cost more than spinning or casting reels, which are by the way more complex to manufacture. J. |

If you look on the internet there are alot of rods that are under $200.00. I don't buy the name brands because of there price but there are alot of
builders and companies that have rods at a great price.

I agree that the gear is overpriced yet at the same time I believe, in a lot of cases, the higher end rods are better performing rods than the low-end. This
isn't always true, but I've seen it enough myself to know that it's not uncommon.
I have a couple of recent examples: I just sold a Cabela's TQR 7'9" 3 wt (that retails for just over $100) and bought a used Sage SLT 8'3" 3 wt. (That retailed new for around $600) Both are fast action rods and fun to fish. In my (fast action oriented opinion) the Sage blows the Cabela's away. I also sold a Dan Craft 0 wt (a $110 blank) and wrapped a Sage TXL 00 wt. (a $280 blank) The Dan Craft was a sweet little rod but again, to me, the Sage is superior in just about every way. The TXL was designed and built in the USA and you really have to wonder just how many 00 weights Sage is going to sell. They spent some time designing a very cool rod for a very small market, I imagine they pay their people more than minimum wage, and they're not going to get rich on this one. At the same time there are a lot of guys, who because of their style and preferences, might be much happier with the Dan Craft than the Sage, and not because of price. So yeah, this stuff costs too much, but if it's more fun for me to fish then I think it's worth it. It's kind of the same reason I sold a perfectly good basic blued Colt 1911 .45 and spent a lot more on a stainless Colt Combat Commander. They both do the same thing but I enjoy the new more than the old. And I could have bought a Taurus .45 for much less than either Colt but I like the Colts. BTW, I have a 5 wt Southbend graphite rod that I paid $20-30 for new that is a great little rod, and if you look at Cabela's right now there are 4 complete outfits (rod/reel/line) for $100 or less. So you don't have to spend much to fly fish but sometimes it's just cool to get nicer stuff. And as in the case of the Elkhorn 2 wt I recently sold--there are some extremely good rods out there for not too much money.
