I was using my Lamiglas 7' 3wt glass rod today, and I was doing some testing with it to see how it might perform as my main smallmouth rod for the next trip. I had a SA Aircel DT4F on and the rod casts it well. The reason for up lining it was to see how well it would cast my weighted crayfish patterns. It did very well to say the least. With a 3wt line it's kind of a chore to cast those flies. Doable, but not comfortable.
I saw a carp cruising near the surface, so I cast the crayfish to him and he turned and took it. I set the hook, and the Orvis Battenkill 3/4 clicker started screaming. I cranked the drag all the way down, but since this is a click pawl reel, even that wouldn't stop him. I had to use the palming rim too. I LOVE palming rims by the way. He made his initial run, and took almost all of the fly line out, but I never saw backing. I played him skillfully off the butt section of the rod, and the rod handled it like a champ. The fight only lasted about 5 minutes before he came to hand.
I love this Lami rod, it is probably my favorite rod out of all the UL rods I have. It casts so nice, and can handle larger fish as the pic proves..............J.
