Posts: 26 06/12/09 12:24 AM	Tags : None I was looking through some pics I had and found several from a trip I took down the the local creek with my Albright 3/4 rod where I caught several Rios that day. Here's a few pics: That day I had my best luck with olive #10 woolly buggers. I was hoping to catch a few of these guys today but even though I saw dozens of them, they were not biting very aggressively and I wasn't able to hook any. These are pretty fish but I'm beginning to think they are more prone to parasites than other fish as I've seen several that had "water fleas" or small wounds that look to have come from them and one with a few with small leeches on it. Meanwhile, in the same water the long ears, greenies, and bass all look healthy without any of these parasites on them. I don't think it is limited to the creek I fish as I've seen people post other pics of Rios that have the wounds on their scales that also appear to be from water fleas.

Posts: 1967 06/12/09 7:59 AM Administrator / Moderator	Mike, That's an interesting observation about the parasites. I noticed those on a few that I caught in Brush Creek near the nose and tail. Posts: 2055 06/12/09 6:40 PM Administrator	When I lived in Austin I used to regularly catch Rio's in the San Gabriel. I think they're actually pretty cool looking fish--and can be very colorful. I always thought they were good fighters but that may be because they were commonly bigger than the other bream I was catching at the time. I've never kept Rio's in an aquarium but I did have a large tank full of African Cichlids for years and they are way more intelligent than many other species of freshwater fish. Maybe that's way I like Rio's--I just assume they're smarter and cooler than other bream.

Interesting, today I fished the Cibolo in Boerne and saw several Rios in the creek there that looked the same way with some of those darn fish fleas on them. That's a good point there Less about it possibly being the bedding habits they have causing them to be more likely to get parasites. I bet they did make interesting aquarium fish Sasha, they look to be pretty aggressive at times, did they attack other fish in the tank? I also agree that the Rios seem to be smarter than regular perch, they sometimes will just ignore a fly while other perch are fighting over it.

The Rio Grande Perch are a Cichlid also known as a Texas Cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus). Not to hijack the thread but yea they were pretty fun to keep and breed. They are aggressive but not as aggressive as other Cichlid species. I used to keep mine with some Jack Depmpseys and an Oscar in one of my 125gal tanks. After that I got into keeping the harder to find African rift lake species and reef aquariums. Now days I keep things like Cyathopharynx furcifer (sorry no common name) and Cyprichromis sp. Jumbo "Kitumba" (sorry no common name either). Sorry for the thread hijack. www.flyfishingaddicts.com

As Sasha said they are a cichlid species, but what makes them special, is that they are the only cichlid species that are native to the United States. All the other species are Central-South American, or African in origin. J. The Ultralight Fly Fishing Forum Ultralight Fly Fisherman, and small stream specialist. NE Ohio, Mahoning River Watershed.
