What affordable light fly reel to match my PT+ 6'6" 2wt? |
Lead | ||
|
I'm looking for a light weight reel that would be lighter than my Martin MG3SS to match my Cabelas PT+ 6'6" 2wt. I need something
affordable..under 100 bucks if possible.

I tested that rod in the 2wt shoot out, and my Dennison ($50) and the Bass Pro Classic UL ($110.00) were the ones that balance that rod the best.

UL reels from Bass Pro | #2 | ||
|
Although it's not showng up now Bass Pro makes a UL reel at 2.2 ounces for under $100.00. It might be worth giving them a call:
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_44559____SearchResults?ordProd=Y&CMID=TOP_selectitems#itemDetail You might also consider a Dennison reel. Les |

Check out the Okuma SLV 2/3, not sure of its exact weight but mine works with a 6'6" 3 wt I have. Usually can be had for circa $50.00, nice little
reels. Cast, not machined aluminum, decent drag.

Teton Tioga | #4 | ||

Hi,
I'm new here but have lurked for a while. I recently bought a Tioga #2 off Riffling Hitch (sp?) here in the classifieds and it's a great little reel. I stopped by Feather-Craft a few days ago and saw that they had some Tioga reels left, and knowing that they are not made anymore, or at least the production is paused for now, I asked how much they are asking for them and if they are discounted. The guy that was helping me said they were going for about half off of $120 and I bought a spool for $15 (usually $50). They have another #2 reel left and several other sizes and spools. If you (or anyone else for that matter) are interested, call them directly and ask them how much they are selling their Tioga reels/spools for and you'll get a terrific deal. If they are only selling them to walk in customers, let me know and I can pick one up for you and you can reimburse me. I drive by there every day, so it's no problem. Chris St. Louis, MO |

I am a new guy here so I don't know all of the issues - but what about a Orvis BBS Fly Reel
I: (3.2 oz, 2½" diameter, for line weights 1-3) for $119.00.
I like mine on a TFO 2wt. If I have commited a faux pax by recomending Orvis, please let me know... Cheers, Doug in Colorado |

Nothing wrong with liking Orvis gear! I have half a dozen of their reels along with a rod and some other misc stuff. The BBS I is a great reel for the money
but may be slightly heavy on a 6'6" rod depending on where you like the balance point. It's a very good reel though, if you decide to go that way.

The PT+ needs a reel under 3oz to balance properly.

And Teton Tiogas have a wonderful reputation as well, no problem mentioning that.

Theres a guy on e-bay that sells J Austin Forbes reels for a decent price. I got the Avon 2" for $79. Weighs next to nothing. If I could do it again I'd get the 2.5" magnesium for the same price. |

Try looking for a Gayle Simplicity No 6. They can usually be found in the neighborhood of $10-20. Mine weighed in at 2.25oz, and balances my 6'6"
Cabela's 2wt perfectly. It's a great old click-pawl reel and has handled some pretty big fish with no worries.

Watch Ebay for a Ryobi 255, its the same reel basically as the Forbes 2. 1/2 inch magnesium UL, sometimes you can get lucky and pickup a nice one for under $50

That's great info Richard. Was the Ryobi made by Young? I remember reading that the Forbes was a Young.

Hi Les,
The Ryobi was made by a very large Japanese sporting goods manufacturing company, everything from fish finders to boats to fishing reels. Its purely their design. The Current Forbes reel is made in the old Ryobi factory to forbes design, he had the spool catch release redesigned to a more young style system. The Rayobi ultra light magnesium reels came in four models, the 255mg at 2.4 ounces being the smallest, was rated for a DT5 or WF6 plus 17 yards of 18# backing. If your going to use gelspun backing it will take quite a bit especially if your loading it with 1-3wt lines, however a DT in any of those will take up some of the room. Next was the 355MG at 3.0 oz, it was rated for a DT8 or WF9 and with the WF line up to 50 yards of backing, this reel is a 3 1/2 diameter and reel is 7/8 inches wide, I fish my one piece Lee Wulff Conolons with this reel its a perfect blance on a 1.7 ounce rod at 6ft and I use it with either a DT7 or WF7 line. Tey made a sightly larger one, the 357Mg at 3.7 ounces, same line rating as the 355mg but Ive never seen one so cant give you more than the listed weight. The big brother of the series is the 455MG, and its my favorite of the lot for my light graphite rods in 10wt, it only weighs in at 4.3 oz, and can take a DT10 with 150 yards of 30# backing. this larger version has a double pawl adjustable drag. I think all four of the Ryobi UL magnesium reels are out of production now, only the Forbes model being produced in the old shop. But you can still pick them up on Ebay, at least all but the 357 Ive never seen one of those. Dont confuse these reels with their standard aluminum model counter parts, these reels have decent spring and pawl adjustable drags, the standard aluminum ones have a much cheaper drag setup that compresses a poorly designed nylon v spring. Ive never seen one with a usable drag the nylon when left under pressure looses all its ability to spring back. Ive had to make metal V springs for the one 455 standard model I still have. They are real poorly designed reels in so far as the adjustable drag system. Richard |
