They seem to be similar with slight variations in the tapers.
I'd be using the line on a Cabela's TQR 7'6" 3 weight.
Thanks!

Anyone out there try these lines together and care to share your thoughts on them?

I have used them in heavier weights, I am more partial to the Rio Grand as I like the taper.
But I think Jerry's used themin lighter lines. |

I've only used the GPX (and like it!). Chris and I discussed it in another thread and I think now Chris trying to find someone now who has used both and
can offer up some additional info. There's got to be someone out there who has used both ;-)

Sorry I can't be of any help either. I only own one 3WT and I have strung up with XPS.

I've had both, and, despite the similarities on paper, they are vastly different lines. The GPX 3wt, while lighter, feels more aggressive by far. The tip
is heavier (I don't remember the measurement) and will handle bigger panfish flies, hoppers, small streamers, and small buggers with ease. The Rio Grande
feels much lighter than it is, due to the fine front taper and fine tip (.028). There is virtually no memory, and the core of the line is 15 lb, vs 20 in most
lines--this line lands on the water like a feather and doesn't overload soft rods on short casts. Given all that, you'd think it wouldn't load fast
rods well, but that's not true. It's one of my favorite lines--I just wish it came in 2wt, as well, and in another color, like tan. I get the bright
green and dye it, as I don't like the dark olive, either.

That's a great deal on that line. Thanks for the heads' up!
CC- I appreciate your description of the two lines. That's very helpful as on paper they look similar but I knew there would be a difference that only experience can relay. Thanks!

Well, thanks to Jerry's keen shopping skills I've got some RIO Grand line coming to me from Bears Den. I'll let y'all know what I think when I
get it on the water.
Happy 4th everyone! |

I ordered one from Bears Den too, and it arrived today. I ran up to the pond with my 3 wt Riffle 'glass (considered "fast" for glass), my 3 wt
Sage LL, my SA GPX DT3 and the new Rio Grand WF3 to do some comparisons. Up until now I've used the GPX on both of these rods. I had some interesting
results. (the short version is that CC knows what he's talking about)
I first tried the Rio on my Riffle 'glass rod using a lightly weighted size 12 woolly bugger. I was *really* disappointed. I had to concentrate on giving it more power just to get the leader to straighten on 30' casts. I was already working up my sales post in my mind, thinking I'd unload the line as soon as I got home. I put the GPX on the Riffle and the life was good again. The line and leader would straighten with almost no effort. Next I put the GPX on my Sage LL, already knowing that it works extremely well, but I wanted to feel the lines back to back. I fished for a little bit and then put the Rio on my Sage. Wow! It was really weird. The rod seemed to come alive. I found I was more accurate, the leader was turning the same fly over with no effort, and the line worked well for short and long casts. And like CC said, this thing really lays down lightly and lifts off the water nicely. It felt fantastic! I put the GPX back on the LL and it felt a little sluggish and seemed like it made a big splash compared to the Rio. I fished the Sage with the Rio for the next hour. It's an excellent combination. Before I left I decided to give the Rio one more try on the Riffle. I did and it just doesn't work on that rod. One more bit of information. When I first got the Sage I tried a H&H WF3 on it and it felt a little light--I didn't like it even though I know the H&H is a good line. So something about the Rio taper just works perfectly on the Sage. So.... here's what I think: the Rio Grand is an excellent line although it might not be ideal on everything, and the GPX is a great line too but it is being relegated to my glass rods. |

I heard from a well respected guy over at Warm Fly that he didn't like the Grand because it was too soft to slide through the guides well and that it
seemed to have a short life. That's the first I've heard I've heard a (respectfully) negative report on this line. I'm curious if this was a
fluke incident. Jerry, or anyone else, what do you think?

I think it's impossible to please everyone. Maybe the guy is used to stiffer saltwater type lines--who knows? The line certainly isn't any more
supple that the much beloved peach Cortland 444.

I got the line in today and have to say my experience with Bear's Den was outstanding! After the line was shipped, one of the personnel there emailed me to
say that shipping was less than what I paid and that they were refunding the difference! (it was only a few $) That doesn't happen very often.
Anyway, I'll need to find some backing and will load it on the spare spool and hopefully will be able to give it a go this weekend. I'll report back what I think. cb |

Chris, I just read their shipping policy the other day. They only charge actual shipping, and don't try to make a profit on shipping. That's makes them
stand out these days.

I got the same refund Chris. It really is a delight to deal with a company like that. I don't think some of these other places realize how much is pisses
people off to pay inflated shipping costs.
I ordered a blank, guides, grip, and reel seat from Mud Hole a few months ago. They didn't bother to tell me the blank was backordered and would take 3-4 weeks to get, and that the reel seat was out of stock too. Instead they shipped one cork grip and a set of guides and charged me $12 shipping. I called and complained--loudly, and got a partial refund on the shipping, but they still lost me as a customer. BTW, I'm anxious to hear how that line turns out for you. Jerry |

Chris, I fished this line again tonight on my 3 wt LL. I was using a foam popper in a 20mph wind and it was fantastic! I hope yours works out as well.

that's great! I still haven't gotten mine wet yet. Hopefully this weekend I'll make it happen...or maybe I can call in sick Thursday or Friday?

I was finally able to get out for a few hours this evening to try out my new line.
I think I liked it. It seemed a bit finicky at times when loading but it was smooth and casted well overall. Sometimes it would load easily and sometimes not. I'm pretty sure the issues I was having was my casting technique/timing so I need to get out some more to get a better feel for it. On a little different note, I read in the literature that came with the line about a process that you go through for the line to 'break in'. What can y'all tell me about line break in? What do you do to the line to break it in? |

Chris, that sounds suspiciously like what the line did with my Riffle. It worked great on my LL but not on my Riffle. I've never knowingly broken in a line
before so I'm not sure what that's about.

Jerry sent me some DT GPX to try out and compare with the RIO recently. I got out Friday during my lunch break at a little park pond across the street from
work and tested them out to see if I liked the RIO or not. It ends up that I love the RIO after all! I could cast it close and far as accurately as I am able
very effortlessly. I'm not exactly sure what my issue was the first time around - like I said before it was probably a technique thing.
I caught 22 4-6" greenies during the 35 minutes I was by the water too. I will probably go out and get some DT eventually as I like some aspects of it but feel that the RIO Grand will suit me very well for my purposes. Thanks again everybody for the helpful input! |
