Sweet!!
I just spent 30 minutes going through the review and I'm impressed--I think you guys knocked it out of the park! I'm sure not everyone will agree with some of the findings and you may hear some gripes about rods that weren't included, but I doubt if there's ever been this much great product information about UL rods in one place. It really helps having multiple reviewers too--it gives you a much better idea of what the rod is like. Thanks guys!! (I'm off to spend another 30 or 45 minutes deciding which 2 wt is next on my list )

The BBS 1 is 3.5 ounces. That's going to push more than 4 ounces when loaded. It will be just a bit heavy, but keep in mind with rods this light that
fatigue isn't an issue. Once you get used to it you'll be fine. If anything, opt for the wf3 line and that will minimize tailing loops by slowing the
rod just a touch. Then again, with an outfit this light the effect of an overly heavy reel, especially one so close the the right balance, isn't going to
be super noticeable. If you can find a reel that's closer to 2.5 ounces rather than the 3.5 of the Orvis you'll be closer to having the rod's
fulcrum at your fingertip.
Yes, this is subtle stuff. But then again, ultralight is about subtlety. And the Elkhorn Western is a fine and subtle instrument. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Joe C. "Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the

I know I don't need another rod.... | #31 | ||

I'm new here. I just got into UL with 3wt. I've been fishing 4wt for the last 3 years. I want to get a 2wt as the 3 wt is a blast, but now I'm
having second thoughts.
I fish with Cap spiders, jitterbees, beadhead wooly worms, gurgle pops and foam spiders to mention a few. I rarely cast more that 30 foot. But I'm wondering if a 2wt will handle weighted flies. My favorites: South Fork Rod( I like a slower rod), St. Croix Legend Ultra, and Echo Carbon. Is there a big difference in the feel of a 7 to 8 inch bluegill between the two weights? I love my 3wt, should I wait on 2 wt? Thanks, Marion |

Marion, you'd be suprised what a 2wt can do. I generally fish flies from 12-16. All my nymphs are are bead heads. I also use #10 foam spiders and have no
issues.

Marion,
Look for my most recent photo essay about creek changes. Although I never mentioned that I was using my TFO 6 foot rod with Cortland DT3 ten meter line, I threw flies as large a #4 woolly buggers. I targeted bass that day and used larger flies to keep the smaller fish at bay. The benefit of this short rod is my ability to get in close under cover and side roll at pockets and undercuts. Even with the heavier more wind-resistant flies, I had very little trouble with this set up. So yes think 2wt. |

Congratulations to the review team. I've never read another rod review like it. Not for a single rod and certainly not for 22 of them. The comparative
opinions of four different reviewers really sets a high standard for objectivity. I hope the other review media will
take notice and emulate it.
Kudos to Jeremy in particular for all those CCS measurements. That was a huge effort! I've never seen a rod review with CCS data before. In general, the review comments agree with the CSS measurements. Not always, but fairly close most of the time. The correlation of measurements and review comments validate CCS better than anything else I've ever read. Again, I hope the other review media take notice! Good job! Tom |

Thanks Tom. I had my oldest son help me with the CCS so it only took about an hour or so to measure all the rods in one sitting. This was done last so that I
wouldn't formulate any biased opinions based on CCS measurements while casting and fishing the rods.

This was the most impressive review of anything I've ever read! I learned a tremendous amount about fly rods in general.
You've set the bar for reviews henceforth. What's next? :) |

Hi Guys well I read the review over three times, really, word for word. You guys did a fantastic job. I just wish a few of the BIG guys in the industry had
taken part. Like for example Sage and their TXL series. I sure wish we had some of the better glass makers too, like McFarland and Steffen to name just too.
Frankly the two weight is prehaps my best all around UL, it does everythng. Not to seem some of the people who can make absolutely fantastic 2wts is a disappointment. Not that the rods listed and tested are K-mart blue light specials, but their are some premium folks that didn't take part. I falt them not the venue or people doing the review. I will give them a piece of my mind next time I order blanks too. Ive been a big supporter of the quality and value of some of these premium rodsmiths, that they didn't take part is very disappointing. Thank you fly fishing Ohio, you guys did a great job, and the vendors who participated should be given credit, they at least had the "willingness" to have their products tested against anyone. It was a great review and you guys did a great job, prehaps next year you can do it again and some of the outfits if they survive this recession will take part as well. I would love to see Sages TXL series tested, as well some of the best custom rod makers wares like McFarland and Steffen, Ive fished alot of these rods and have found none better, thats why I was somewhat disappointed that they did not take part. Just my humble 2 cents worth. Richard |

flyfishing4goldentrout wrote:Richard, you're not alone in thinking this--at least according to our poll results so far. I initially thought that the 1 wt would be the runaway favorite but I've been shown the error of my ways The 2
wt is much more popular than I imagined (even though my first UL rod was my Sage LL 7'9" 2 wt).
I also agree that the review was an amazing piece of work and a great service to UL fly-rodders everywhere *and* it's a shame some of the big name manufacturers chose not to play. |

Hahaha yea I was surprise too when I discovered that the 2wt just worked well for all my UL needs. Not to say the lighter line rods didn't but just to
admit that to do better than a really good 2wt takes a hello of a super light line rod. Thats sort of what disappointed me in this review. While of course Ive
not tested all the rods you guys have, I have owned and fished the TXL series sense it was introduced. Again frankly its a series all others I fish are
measured against. And few if none match it in 00. One weights are another matter, sense alot of rods are available, the best factory 1wt, for me was the Sage
TXL, but here is where our custom glass rod makers can snipe in and what did we see in this shootoff, none particiapation. its a shame, a One weight has never
been a favorite of mine, nore the 00, simply because you can do it as well with a 2wt and it will allow you a wider range of flys and sinking leaders and such,
Thats why for me a 2wt works better, I fish my favorite with a Wulff TT2I and a sinking braided tappered leader and either 9Xor 10X tippets. fun stuff. midges
and nymphs sight casting in winter or very early snow on the ground ice in the river spring.
I would ask the folks who put this shootoff on, was Sage invited? how about Scott or Winston or some of the others? I find it disappointing that these big guys didnt feel a need to show their abilities. Frankly and I love the Sage TXL I wont buy another, until I find out what they are afraid of to do a shoot off, or perhaps their noses are too far in the air to be challenged? Richard |
