Don, the first insert is ready to be cut to length and finished. I told you it had some nice figure in the wood. I haven't applied any finish--I just
touched it with a damp rag for the photo so you could see the grain. I'll try to get the other one done tonight. Either way I'll bring what I have
done tomorrow.

That is one pretty piece of wood!!
It'll be stunning on a small rod!

I'm curious if it's stabilized or not? Any thoughts on the need to stabilize.

Hobine wrote: It's very well cured but not epoxy impregnated or anything like that. I don't think it needs more than a light coat of urethane or varnish to seal it. |

Curly maple. I hope Don can use it--it's a pretty piece of wood. The blank I turned it from was a little short so the insert is a bit short too. I think
it'll work for some of these smaller reels though.

Did you already varnish the wood? I have been applying turners polish (Friction Polish) while the wood is still spinning. Super nice shine and very durable. I
make my own from equal parts boiled linseed oil and shellac- I then thin it with mineral spirits about 10% by volume.

Nah, I gave it to Don unfinished. I've had really poor luck with the several kinds of friction polish I've tried--it looks fantastic but doesn't
last long--maybe a couple of years, but I've never tried the formula you're using. I'll have to give it a shot.
